Owen E. Hughes investigates governance across sectors including
corporate, international and political governance, arguing that
governance, as a general concept and an operational system, is in
crisis. Hughes reasons that the crisis is in governance in general,
in how societies run themselves, in how companies are run and how
international organizations are run. This critical book examines
the ways in which governance enables the smooth running of these
societies, companies and organizations, from sub-national to
international levels, and how the setting up of structures or
institutional arrangements can impact this. These structures,
institutions and arrangements are explored from legal, ethical and
behavioural perspectives to provide a well-informed introduction to
the crisis of governance. The book further examines debates over
the facts, lies, science and policies behind governance,
scrutinising the conflicts between democracy and autocracy in
governance. The Crisis of Governance will be a beneficial resource
for both undergraduate and graduate courses in public
administration and management. Academics, students and scholars
interested in public affairs, international politics and corporate
economics will also find value in this timely book.

Strategy is best understood not as a science, but as an art - one
of universal applications that transcend situation or historical
context. The principles that were successful in war and politics
through history can have real and demonstrable applications in
business and management. Here, professor of strategy Owen Hughes
helps practitioners and students to draw those parallels and to
develop a profound and holistic understanding of strategy that will
help them plan for, and achieve, success. Describing strategy as an
intersection of five facets - purpose, capability, will, terrain
and tactics - Hughes draws from colourful and dramatic examples
from history, and clearly demonstrates how these tactics might be
applied in your own life and work. This book is an ideal strategy
text for any practitioner, lecturer or student who tires of
familiar strategy frameworks with limited scope.

In 1993, the genetic mutation responsible for Huntington's disease
(HD) was identified. Considered a milestone in human genomics, this
discovery has led to nearly two decades of remarkable progress that
has greatly increased our knowledge of HD, and documented an
unexpectedly large and diverse range of biochemical and genetic
perturbations that seem to result directly from the expression of
the mutant huntingtin gene. Neurobiology of Huntington's Disease:
Applications to Drug Discovery presents a thorough review of the
issues surrounding drug discovery and development for the treatment
of this paradigmatic neurodegenerative disease. Drawing on the
expertise of key researchers in the field, the book discusses the
basic neurobiology of Huntington's disease and how its monogenic
nature confers enormous practical advantages for translational
research, including the creation of robust experimental tools,
models, and assays to facilitate discovery and validation of
molecular targets and drug candidates for HD. Written to support
future basic research as well as drug development efforts, this
volume: Covers the latest research approaches in genetics,
genomics, and proteomics, including high-throughput and
high-content screening Highlights advances in the discovery and
development of new drug therapies for neurodegenerative disorders
Examines the practical realities of preclinical testing, clinical
testing strategies, and, ultimately, clinical usage While the
development of effective drug treatments for Huntington's disease
continues to be tremendously challenging, a highly interactive and
cooperative community of researchers and clinical investigators now
brings us to the threshold of potential breakthroughs in the quest
for therapeutic agents. The impressive array of drug discovery
resources outlined in the text holds much promise for treating this
devastating disease, providing hope to long-suffering Huntington's
disease patients and their families.
An insightful and practical guide to family trusts Family Trusts is
a step-by-step guide for anyone involved in family trusts: trust
creators, trustees, beneficiaries, and advisors. It will help
families create and administer a culture that recognizes trusts as
a gift of love. Marrying the practical and emotional aspects of
family wealth, this book provides a hands-on primer that focuses on
fostering positive relationships, and structuring the trust
appropriately for the situation and the people involved. It tackles
difficult topics with frank and honest discussion, from the first
beneficiary meeting to working with addictions, and more. Written
by a team of experts in family wealth, this information is becoming
increasingly crucial to the successful execution of a trust; you'll
learn what type of person makes the best trustee, how to be an
excellent beneficiary, and the technical aspects that help you
build a better trust from the very beginning. There's been a
staggering increase in trustee/beneficiary litigation and
hostility, but that doesn't mean it's inevitable. Plenty of trusts
are running smoothly, with positive experiences on all sides. This
book shows you how to set up your trust to succeed from the start,
with step-by-step guidance and expert insight. * Express clear and
thoughtful intent for the trust * Create a healthy and supportive
culture * Select the right trustee, trust protector, and trust
advisor * Take the time to prepare before initially meeting the
beneficiary * Conduct a productive first meeting to set a tone for
the relationship Historically, there has been little consideration
given to the culture of trusts, and this oversight may be a key
driver of the behavior that's becoming more prevalent. Family
Trusts explores the nature of these relationships, and shows you
how to build a trust that retains the nature and spirit with which
it was intended.
Operating on the premise that our failure to recognize our
interconnected relationship to the rest of the cosmos is the origin
of planetary peril, this volume presents academic, activist, and
artistic perspectives on how to inspire reflection and motivate
action in order to construct alternative frameworks and establish
novel solidarities for the sake of our planetary home. The
selections in this volume explore ecologies of interdependence as a
frame for religious, theological, and philosophical analysis and
practice. Contributors examine questions of justice, climate
change, race, class, gender, and coloniality and discuss
alternative ways of engaging the world in all its biodiversity.
Each essay, poem, reflection, and piece of art contributes to and
reflects upon how to live out entangled differences toward positive
global change. Constructive and practical, global and local,
communal and personal, Ecological Solidarities is an innovative
contribution to the discourses on relational and liberative thought
and practice in religion, philosophy, and theology. It will be
welcomed by scholars of World Christianity and theology as well as
seminary students, activists, and laity interested in issues of
justice and ecology.
This book covers the inexorable exhaustion of the IPv4 address
space, the interim fix to this based on Network Address Translation
(NAT) and Private Addresses, and the differences between IPv4 and
IPv6. It will help you understand the limitations and problems
introduced by the use of NAT and introduce you to the far simpler
network and software designs possible, using a larger, unified
address space. IPv6, a mature and viable replacement for IPv4, is
currently used by more than 36% of all global Internet traffic.
Wireless telephone service providers in many countries have
migrated their networks to IPv6 with great success. The elimination
of NAT and Private Addresses has vastly simplified network design
and implementation. Further, there are now enough public addresses
allocated to accommodate all anticipated uses for the foreseeable
future. Most networking products and software, especially
open-source software, are already fully IPv6 compliant. Today, no
business should purchase obsolete products that support only IPv4.
The global IPv6 Forum estimates that there are millions of
networking professionals still needing to learn the fundamentals of
IPv6 technologies to move forward. This book is for them. With
plans in place for a shutdown of IPv4 on global networks ("Sunset
IPv4") the time to learn is now. If you want a job in IT,
especially network hardware or software, and you don't know IPv6,
you are already obsolete. What You Will Learn This book serves as a
guide to all relevant Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
standards Request for Comments (RFCs), organized by topic and
discussed in plain language Understand how IPv6 makes viable
technologies such as multicast (for efficient global audio/video
streaming), IPsec VPNs (for better security), and simpler VoIP Take
"edge computing" to the limit by eliminating intermediary servers
made necessary by IPv4 NAT-for example, making connections directly
from my node to yours Discover how organizations can introduce IPv6
into existing IPv4 networks ("Dual Stack"), and then eliminate the
legacy IPv4 aspects going forward ("Pure IPv6") for the mandates
going into place now (for example, US DoD requirements to move all
networks to Pure IPv6) Recognize that 5G networking (the Grand
Convergence of conventional networks and wireless service) depends
heavily on the advanced features IPv6 Who This Book Is For
Networking professionals. Readers should have at least some
familiarity with the precursor protocol (IPv4) and legacy TCP/IP
based networks. Some knowledge of network models, such as DoD
four-layer model or OSI 7-layer model, is helpful to understand
where the Internet Protocol fits into the larger picture. For
network software developers using the Sockets API (in UNIX,
Windows, etc.), this book will help you to understand the
extensions to that API needed to work with IPv6.
This book helps you recognise Character Traits - Positive and negative. Analyse handwriting with sample diagrams. Also tell of the background to Graphology.
Children With High-Functioning Autism: A Parent's Guide offers
parents the information needed to help them cope with their child's
autism and to navigate the path as they first perceive differences,
seek assistance and treatment, and help their child develop into
his or her full potential.
Including examples of the author's own experiences with her
child with autism, this book helps families realize that there are
others on similar paths--and help is available. With topics ranging
from understanding the first signs of autism and the diagnosis,
finding a support network and filling out necessary paperwork, to
determining the various types of therapies available and planning
for adulthood, this book provides parents valuable insight into
this new world.
With an emphasis on high-functioning autism, Pervasive
Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, and Asperger's
syndrome, Children With High-Functioning Autism: A Parent's Guide
helps parents learn to celebrate small areas of growth and keep the
focus on the child.
In order to deploy and use Microsoft Certificate Services, you need
to understand the fundamentals of cryptography, digital signatures,
encryption, TLS, and S/MIME. It is also important to understand the
concepts behind public key infrastructure (PKI). This book teaches
you all the required background knowledge you need. Then it takes
you deeper, step by step, teaching you how to deploy Certificate
Services and configure it to issue various digital certificate
types, complete with examples of using these certificates with IIS,
Outlook, and Windows. Microsoft-based networks-on-premises, hybrid,
and cloud-based networks-are used in companies of all sizes. Within
them, there are many applications of digital certificates that can
be created and managed by Microsoft Certificate Services. As
security is more important than ever, and cryptography and PKI are
fundamental to so many of these defenses, understanding Microsoft
Certificate Services is becoming an increasingly more desirable
skill. Most IT workers don't realize the many uses and purposes of
Certificate Services, especially within a corporate or government
agency network, and how tightly integrated they are with the
Microsoft Windows Domain style of networks and Active Directory
(on-premises or cloud-based, including Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud
Services). This book will teach you the gamut. You will appreciate
the learning approach presented in the book, beginning with the
basics (cryptographic primitives such as encryption and message
digests), getting into combinations of primitives to accomplish
specific things (such as digital signatures and envelopes), and
then trying real-word systems based on digital certificates and PKI
(such as TLS, S/MIME secure email, cryptographic authentication,
and more). The book wraps it all up and teaches you how to deploy
Certificate Services and issue the various types of certificates,
including how they are used. What You Will Learn Understand basic
cryptography (symmetric and asymmetric key encryption, message
digests, and digital signatures and envelopes) Know how TLS,
S/MIME, and cryptographic authentication work Discover applications
of cryptography related to secure servers with TLS and
cryptographic (passwordless) authentication to online services
including Windows and secure email Get to know the common types of
digital certificates, how to create and manage them, and examples
of their use with IIS, Outlook, etc. Who This Book Is For Microsoft
system and network engineers, security engineers, and CISOs.
Readers should have familiarity with Windows Server 2019 (or more
recent) and Active Directory.

Explosions, car chases, narrow escapes---what summer blockbuster is
complete without thrilling moments like these? In the 19th century,
long before the era of film and television, it was America's
theaters that offered audiences such thrills, with ""sensation
scenes"" of speeding trains, burning buildings, and endangered
bodies, often in melodramas extolling the virtues of temperance,
abolition, and women's suffrage. In Spectacles of Reform, Amy E.
Hughes scrutinizes these peculiar intersections of spectacle and
reform, revealing that spectacle plays a crucial role in American
activism. By examining how theater producers and political groups
harnessed its power and appeal, Hughes suggests that spectacle
was---and remains---central to the dramaturgy of reform. Hughes
traces the cultural history of three famous sensation scenes---the
drunkard suffering from the delirium tremens, the fugitive slave
escaping over a river, and the victim tied to the railroad
tracks---assessing how they conveyed, allayed, and denied concerns
about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. To be attuned
to the dynamics of spectacle, Hughes argues, is to understand how
we see. Consequently, Spectacles of Reform will interest not only
theater historians, but also scholars and students of political,
literary, and visual culture who are curious about how U.S.
citizens saw themselves and their world during a pivotal period in
American history.
How does prehistoric material get from its place of origin to its
location of archaeological recovery? While this question may seem
basic, a moment's reflection suggests that the answers carry
important implications for arc-haeological interpretation about
social organization, settlement, and subsistence practices.
Archaeologists know much about the temporal and spatial
distribution of materials in prehistoric western North America, but
comparatively little has emerged regarding the causes of such
distributions. Trade and exchange, mobility, and direct access all
have been credited with observed distributions, but the reasons for
settling on specific behavioral linkages is rarely made clear. This
volume investigates the circumstances and conditions under which
trade/exchange, direct access, and/or mobility best account for
material conveyance across varying distances at different times in
the past. Each chapter contextualizes distributional and chemical
data, evaluates competing distribution hypotheses, and addresses
the reasoning and inferences employed to arrive at conclusions
about the human behaviors responsible for the distributions of
materials. Contributors showcase a range of diverse and creative
ways of thinking about these issues in the California and Great
Basin archaeological record, and why it matters.
